Are the Museum sites handicapped accessible?

 

Yes. The research library and offices in the lower level of the Museum building are wheelchair accessible. There is a lift to the exhibit gallery on the second floor; parking is via the alley behind the Museum. The W T Preston has an ADA ramp to the main deck.

   
 

Is the Anacortes Historic Preservation Board connected to the Museum?

 

Yes, the Museum supports the AHPB with staff time and file space (limited).

   
 

May I view the Wallie Funk Collection?

 

Because of the size of this collection, staff time limitations and protection concerns, casual viewing is not possible. However, we certainly respond to formal research requests for specific material, preferably by appointment during research library hours.

   
 

What boards govern Museum operations?

 

The Museum Advisory Board consists of 7 volunteers appointed by the Mayor to advise the Mayor and the Museum Director. The Museum Foundation Board provides non-profit stewardship of monetary grants, donations and funds raised by the Foundation in support of the Museum. Board members also manage the two Museum gift shops, host special events, and publish a quarterly newsletter.

   
 

What happens to the stuff we donate to the Museum?

 

A Collections Committee accepts or reject items brought in for consideration as acquisitions to the Museum collections. Items accepted will have a meaningful history and connection to our community. In addition, the Museum must be able to properly store and protect them.

   
 

What is the current exhibit?

 

Two exhibits are running concurrently through December 2009. "Colorful Characters & Local Lore" looks at the fascinating folks who've helped shape Guemes and Fidalgo Islands. "Murals Unmasked!" is a 25-year retrospective of the Anacortes Mural Project. We also have a permanent exhibit depicting the early history of the area through photographs and artifacts.

   
 

When is the Museum open?

 

The Exhibit Gallery is open Mon through Sat from 10-4 PM and Sun 1-4 PM. Closed Wednesdays. The Research Library is open M, T, Th & F, 10-4 PM or by appointment. Appointments are appreciated! The W.T. PRESTON Snagboat Heritage Center is open wekends only April, May, Sept, Oct, Saturdays 10-4 PM and Sundays 11-4 PM; 10-4 PM daily except Wednesday June through August (Sundays 11-4 PM); closed November-March.

New exhibit! "1910 - A Look Back 100 Years"

2010 marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Carnegie building – home of the Anacortes Museum – and to celebrate, we look at what was happening in Anacortes 100 years ago.

 
People Collect the Darndest Things...

The Museum is starting a series of short-term exhibits featuring special collections of Fidalgo and Guemes residents. The first one opened May 22 with Clarence and Lois Ricks' selection of plumb bobs, old-time tools and toys, carvings and more.

 
"The Wawona and the End of the Age of Sail"

Come on in to the Maritime Heritage Center and we'll spin you a yarn of the grand old cod schooner Wawona. This new exhibit runs until Autumn 2011 and admission is free!

 
Anacortes Antique Machinery Show

Enjoy the 15th annual machinery show on Saturday, Sept. 11 at Market and 6th St., 9-5 PM. Vintage gas, steam and diesel engines, tractors, sawmill and more. Fun for the family, and free!
