2011 Historic Preservation Award Presented
At the May 23 City Council meeting, Mayor Maxwell presented
the 2011 Historic Preservation Award for Project Excellence
to the Anacortes Adventist Fellowship. The award is to
recognize and applaud the thoughtful restoration of the
former Christian Science Church building at 1419 Eighth
Street. Kevin Welch, a member of the congregation and
manager of the restoration project, accepted the award.
Every year the Anacortes Historic Preservation Board
recognizes similar accomplishments in the preservation of
the physical and cultural history of Anacortes. If you are
aware of a deserving individual or organization for a 2012
Historic Preservation Award, please contact the AHPB through
Steve Oakley at the Anacortes Museum.
Take Our Maps with You
It is spring again and the beginning of the seasons to be seeing the sights.
For about a year we’ve had interactive maps of our Historical Tours available on our site. We’ve added QRs so now all you have to do to take the maps with you is use your smart phone’s QR reader and make the URL one of your favorites.
Find It!
This month the search is for oculi or bulls-eye windows. Be sure to let us know where else you Find It!
Did you find any bow-ties like the one at 1120 8th St. that we featured last month?
Handbook of Anacortes House Styles
We've added a new chapter, Modern Style Houses, to our Handbook. Modern style houses share a number of features. Generally they have low-pitched gabled or hipped roofs, minimal front porches, and few decorative features.
Preservation Awards
If you know of someone deserving of our Preservation Award, please send us a note at the Museum or call 360-293-1915.
May is Historic Preservation Month. The Anacortes Historical Preservation Board is planning to honor outstanding efforts in historic preservation in Anacortes again this year through the Historic Preservation Award Program. In 2010, Project Excellence Awards were given to Elaine Walker for her column in the Anacortes American, "Back in the Day," and to Bret Lunsford for his book, Images of America: Anacortes. The goal of the award program is to recognize and promote efforts to maintain or restore the physical and cultural heritage of the city.
The Board welcomes nominations from the community for these awards. Categories suggested for recognition include historic property stewardship or rehabilitation projects, research or public education in local historic resources, and historic preservation planning. Residents of Anacortes should submit nominations by March 31, 2011. They will be reviewed by the Board and awards will be presented by the Mayor at a City Council meeting in May.
More information about previous awards and the nomination and award process can be found on our Preservation Awards page.
