ANACORTES HISTORIC PRESERVATION BOARD Walking Tour of Historic Downtown Anacortes ... see Brochure; ... KML

We are planning a February Energy Workshop.  We’ll review heat loss paths and what can be done about them without damaging the historic character of your old house.  Check back for the exact time and location or use the City’s Subscribe (also at the bottom of many City web pages) and we’ll email the time and place to you as soon as the arrangements have been made.

We are proud of our 2009 accomplishments:

·         Extending our pre-1940 historic building survey southward to 24th street

·         Showing people how to research the history of their old houses and launching the House History and Plaque Program

·         Adding 4 more properties to the Anacortes Historical Register

·         Continually updating our web site,

And we have even more ambitious plans for 2010:

·         Completing the pre-1940 survey for the entire city

·         Producing a Handbook of Anacortes House Styles

·         Holding more workshops

·         Installing interpretive historical signage around town

See Chair Susan Rooks’ 11 January review with the City Council on TV10 or on a DVD checked out from the Anacortes Library.

  Introducing Our
Handbook of Anacortes House Styles

Over the coming months we will be releasing chapters of our Handbook of Anacortes House Styles. Look for future chapters that will be posted as they are completed. Each chapter will be filled with descriptions, facts, and pictures, as well as a list of addresses where real examples can be seen. We are aiming for the handbook to be entertaining as well as educational; helpful to those interested in restoring their homes; and, in the end, comprehensive of every historic house style in our town. We encourage your questions and comments. Please let us know what you think.

Let Us Introduce You to the Regional Archives in Bellingham

You can visit the Northwest Regional Archives or submit inquiries by phone or email at this address:

Washington State Archives: NW Region

Bellingham, WA 98225-9123

Telephone: 360-650-3125
Fax: 360-650-3323
E-mail: State.Archives@wwu.edu

The Archives web site is one of our useful links (click … some useful links on the right margin of any AHPB page). A listing of the records held at the Northwest Regional Archives is posted on the State Archives web page. Select a government agency in the Record Group list, then an office from the Subgroup list: Skagit County, then Auditor, for example. The records transferred to the Archives from that office will be listed below. Click on a record title for a description of the record and inclusive dates. Although the Archives does not hold all the records for the entire span of Washington’s history from the various county and city offices in the region, it does hold extensive series of some records from all seven counties, with more complete representation in Whatcom, Skagit, and Snohomish counties. These series include:
• Birth and death records from January, 1891 to July, 1907
• Marriage records
• Court records including naturalization records, court dockets, and civil, criminal, and probate case files
• Land records including general indices to recordings, deeds, and patents
• Real and personal property tax records
• County commissioners, county and city council record of proceedings, ordinances, and resolutions
• School district and Educational Service District records including school censuses
In requesting these records you may find that there gaps in the span of dates within a particular series. For example, ...   read more

ABOUT THE BOARD

The five-member volunteer Historic Preservation Board is appointed by the City Council and meets every 3rd Tuesday, 7:00 PM, in City Hall. Its members, like many Anacortes residents, believe that our old buildings and homes are among our city’s most valuable assets. The preliminary agenda for each meeting is posted about one week prior to the meeting. Minutes are posted within the week following the meeting.

The major responsibility of the Board is to identify and encourage the conservation of the City of Anacortes’ historic resources by initiating and maintaining a register of historic places and reviewing proposed changes to register properties. The Board serves as the city’s primary resource in matters of historic planning and preservation and also works to raise community awareness of Anacortes’ historic resources. Preservation Awards recognizing significant contributors is one such activity. This year we are using these intiatives to fulfill these responsibilities.
