House History and Plaque Program

House History and Plaque Program Criteria
Objectives for the AHHP Program include enriching our understanding of the history of Anacortes and identifying houses of historic interest. This program is an adjunct to and in no way intended to replace the Anacortes Local Register.
- Building must be at least 60 years old to be eligible for a plaque, but house history submissions for newer homes are welcome.
- Owner must provide a chain of title, showing all the owners of the building and the original plot.
- Owner may provide a chain of occupancy, which is a list of residents of the building with dates and occupations.
- Owner must provide a set of exterior photos showing all four elevations and decorative or construction details.
- If possible, describe any major modifications to the building and identify the when they were made.
- Note any interesting additional information about the property. Example: 1234 Z Street was the home of Anacortes’ first physician. 8910 Q Street is the only surviving example of a Victorian Gothic cottage.
Your application will be reviewed by the AHPB. If your home meets the above criteria, you are eligible to obtain a historic building plaque. The Board will send you a certificate noting the date your house was built and the name of the original or historically recognized owner, which goes on the plaque. You can then go to Anders Sign Co. (293-2452) with the certificate and arrange to have a plaque made for your house. The cost is about $35.00. To participate in the program and special rates, you must show Anders Sign Co. the certificate.
The Board recommends that home owners mount the plaque where it is visible from the street, preferably on the front of the house.
